Sonic Acts is proud to announce the continuation of the OVEREXPOSED residency programme. With this renewed open call, we invite applications from artists and researchers working across the fields of environmental humanities with a special focus on pollution and experimental art and media. The deadline for applications is 1 November 2021.
OVEREXPOSED is part of a four-year research programme from Sonic Acts on the materiality of pollution and systemic and political issues related to the contamination of our environment. It is an opportunity for artists and researchers to expand their practice and develop new ideas and methodologies while being financially supported in their work.
Scheduled to take place in November 2021, the residency enables artists and researchers to develop their practice around the core questions underlying the OVEREXPOSED programme – investigating pollution and its (unequal) effects on all things living and non-living. Using artistic research as an exploration of the connections between aesthetics, historical materiality and politics, the programme intends to create awareness about pollution and its interconnectedness on a planetary scale, stimulate thought and imagination about necessary steps and, of course, mobilise direct action.
What is this residency about?
Residents are expected to develop their artistic practice around the core questions underlying the Sonic Acts OVEREXPOSED programme, investigating pollution as a global thread that affects everything living and non-living on the planet. With this residency programme, Sonic Acts wishes to create awareness about pollution in our local surroundings and its interconnectedness on a planetary scale; stimulate thought and imagination about necessary steps, both locally and globally; and of course, mobilise direct action. We consider artistic research as an exploration of the connections between aesthetics, historical materiality and politics.
What is expected?
Residents are expected to present their research in three formats: 1) As a text that will be published in one or more suitable Sonic Acts channels. The length of the text should be between 4000 and 8000 words; 2) As a research journal that focuses on visual materials – field notes, photos, archival findings, etc. – to be published alongside the text; 3) As a public presentation, such as a lecture, concert or video screening, to be organised by Sonic Acts in collaboration with the resident.
How long is the residency programme?
The residency lasts for one continuous month. After the selection has been published, successful applicants are required to choose a one month period between December 2020 and May 2021 for their residency, in consultation with the Sonic Acts team. The presentation dates are also to be agreed upon with Sonic Acts.
Who can apply?
The OVEREXPOSED residency programme is intended for artists and researchers active in the fields of environmental, blue, animal and energy humanities, discard studies, disaster studies, waste colonialism, health care studies, postcolonial studies, geopolitics, media and experimental arts, etc.
There is no age limit for applicants. Sonic Acts particularly welcomes and encourages applications from disabled, queer, non-binary and POC artists and researchers. We also encourage applicants younger than 35 years old.
What is the financial support?
Each resident receives a total fee of €2.000 for the residency, including production costs during the residency. Cost for presentation in the context of a Sonic Acts programme will be borne by Sonic Acts.
How does one apply?
Applications should include the following:
• Research proposal summarising the intended focus (max. 3000 characters – roughly one page);
• CV & portfolio (max. 10 MB);
• Biography (max. 2000 characters);
• Profile photo (max. 5 MB);
• Contact information (name, email, phone, website and home address).
The (edited) biography and profile photo will be used for the publication of selected residents on our website.
What are the deadlines and who is in charge of the selection process?
Applications should be submitted by email in English by 1 November 2020. Please email your application in PDF with OVEREXPOSED Residency in the subject field to residency[at]sonicacts[dot]com.
Selected applicants will be notified by email by 15 November at the latest.
Sonic Acts will not notify applicants that were not selected. Please follow sonicacts.com, where we will publish the results by 16 November.
The selection committee comprises the curatorial team of Sonic Acts.
